The Ghana Police Service has successfully restored calm in Ntotroso following a security breach at the Newmont mining site on the night of January 8, 2025.
A group of individuals attempted to steal gold from the mine, leading to a confrontation with police that tragically resulted in the deaths of three people and injuries to four others.
During the incident, police officers were compelled to engage with the suspects to control the situation.
Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, immediately intervened, coordinating efforts with the Regional Police team throughout the night.
“We worked alongside community leaders and youth to de-escalate tensions and prevent any further violence or reprisal attacks,” Dr. Dampare said.
Thanks to these collaborative efforts, the situation in Ntotroso has been stabilized.
The police confirmed that a special investigation team has been sent from Accra to thoroughly investigate the incident. A reinforcement team has also been deployed to ensure ongoing peace and order in the community.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed that the three deceased individuals were Muslims, and the necessary legal procedures are being followed to facilitate the respectful release of their bodies to their families for burial later today, January 9, 2025.
The police have urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
