The Mancelle Girls’ Senior High School in the Oforikrom Municipality of the Ashanti Region are set to experience improved safety on campus following the installation of new streetlights.
The intervention, led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Answel Sadat, forms part of a broader effort to strengthen security across selected second-cycle institutions within the municipality.

In the first phase of the initiative, the school received five boxes of streetlights, amounting to ten individual units. The installation is expected to improve visibility across the campus, particularly during night hours, when concerns about safety have often been raised.
Presenting the items, Hon. Sadat reiterated his commitment to enhancing security in schools, stressing the importance of proper lighting in deterring crime and protecting both lives and property.
“This initiative forms part of our broader commitment to creating a safe and enabling learning environment for our students. Security is not negotiable when it comes to education, and we are determined to ensure that our schools are well protected,” the MCE stated.
School authorities welcomed the development, describing it as both timely and impactful. According to them, inadequate lighting in parts of the campus had long posed challenges, especially during evening study sessions and night-time movements.
“With the installation of these streetlights, we are confident that both students and staff will feel safer and more comfortable going about their activities after dark,” a representative of the school administration remarked.
The initiative is expected to extend beyond Mancelle Girls’ SHS. Hon. Sadat disclosed that St. Louis Senior High School and KNUST Senior High School will also benefit from similar support in the next phase of the exercise.
Residents and stakeholders within the Oforikrom Municipality have largely welcomed the move, describing it as a proactive step toward improving safety in schools. Some parents also expressed relief, noting that better lighting would help ease concerns about the security of their children, particularly those residing on campus.
Education observers have also commended the intervention, emphasising that a secure environment is essential for effective teaching and learning. They have further called for sustained investment in infrastructure and safety measures across schools in the municipality.
The Oforikrom Municipal Assembly is expected to monitor the impact of the project as it progresses, while exploring additional ways to support educational institutions.
The provision of streetlights highlights growing attention to student welfare, with many stakeholders noting that combining academic development with practical safety measures is key to building a resilient education system.
