An officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has died, while another is in critical condition after an explosion involving a motor tricycle carrying suspected dynamite at Hamile in the Upper West Region.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 3, along an unauthorised route in the border community after security personnel reportedly attempted to intercept the tricycle and its occupants.
According to information gathered from security sources, the vehicle was transporting suspected explosive materials when it encountered security personnel at a checkpoint. The occupants allegedly refused to stop, leading to a pursuit that ended in the explosion.
The blast killed the civilians on board the tricycle, who were reportedly transporting the suspected explosives, as well as one Immigration officer involved in the pursuit.
Another officer sustained critical injuries and is said to be in a serious condition. However, details regarding the injured officer’s medical treatment and the full extent of the injuries remain unclear.
The circumstances surrounding the explosion, including the nature and quantity of the suspected explosive materials, have yet to be fully established.
Hamile is a border community in the Upper West Region, close to Ghana’s boundary with Burkina Faso. The area is a key security zone where personnel from various agencies monitor cross-border movements and work to prevent unauthorised activities.
