The Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, has revealed that only 1,000 applicants will be recruited into the Ghana Immigration Service despite an overwhelming number of applications received during the latest recruitment exercise.
According to the minister, more than 180,000 young people applied to join the Service, highlighting the intense competition for employment opportunities within Ghana’s security sector.
Mr. Muntaka made the disclosure during a press briefing on Wednesday, March 11, where he addressed public concerns surrounding recruitment into the country’s security agencies.
He explained that the large number of applicants far exceeds the current personnel strength of the Immigration Service.
“The total of over 180,000 young men wanted to join the Ghana Immigration Service. But the interesting thing is that today, the Ghana Immigration Service, the strength, from the Comptroller General to the last officer, stands at 18,300. Less than 20,000, yet you have 180,000 opting to join,” he said.
The minister noted that logistical limitations, particularly training and accommodation infrastructure, restrict the number of recruits the Service can take in during the current exercise.
“Unfortunately, because of the physical space, we could only have space for 1,000,” he stated.
The revelation underscores the significant demand for jobs among Ghana’s youth and the growing pressure on the government to create more employment opportunities.
