The Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project has warned motorists to expect increased traffic congestion around Kaneshie following the temporary closure of a section of the Dr Busia Highway at Pamprom Junction.
The westbound carriageway at the junction was closed to traffic on Monday, September 7, 2026, to allow contractors to undertake ongoing works under the GARID Project.
GARID Project Coordinator, Dr Ohene Sarfo, said the closure was likely to place additional pressure on the already congested Kaneshie area.
He consequently advised motorists who are not heading to Kaneshie to avoid the area and consider alternative routes.
“What we advise is that if you don’t have any business in Kaneshie as a destination, as much as possible, avoid it, because the traffic will build up, and it will really be inconvenient,” he said in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM.
Alternative routes for motorists
Dr Sarfo identified a number of routes motorists could use to bypass the affected section and reduce the number of vehicles converging on Kaneshie.
One option is the Kwame Nkrumah Avenue route through Abossey Okai or Kaneshie North, before connecting to the N1.
Motorists can also use the Atta Mills Highway through Korle Bu and Dansoman, exiting around Mallam and Sakaman.
“You could even use the Atta Mills Highway and onwards through Korle Bu, Dansoman, and exit at Mallam, Sakaman, thereabouts, so that the volumes would reduce coming to this point, because this is a hotspot now,” Dr Sarfo said.
He explained that the use of alternative routes would help reduce traffic volumes around Pamprom Junction and ease pressure on the Kaneshie corridor.
GARID appeals for cooperation
For motorists who need to travel through the affected area, the GARID coordinator appealed for cooperation with traffic management officials and adherence to the designated diversion arrangements.
He said motorists’ cooperation would be important in limiting delays and ensuring that the road works are completed promptly.
“For those who need to come through here, we would ask for your cooperation so that we can get this activity ongoing quickly, finish quickly, and then we can open it up to traffic,” he added.
The temporary closure is part of ongoing GARID interventions aimed at improving drainage infrastructure and strengthening flood resilience across the Greater Accra Region.
Motorists using the Kaneshie-Pamprom corridor are therefore encouraged to plan their journeys ahead of time, allow for additional travel time and use alternative routes where possible to avoid the expected congestion.
