Parliament is set to reconvenes today at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) as members return from recess for the Fifth Meeting of the Fourth Session of the Eighth Parliament.
The meeting, which begins at 10 am, was called by Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin following the ongoing renovations in the Parliament House chamber.
A item on the agenda includes the presentation of the budget estimates for the first three months of the 2025 fiscal year, which requires approval from the finance minister.
Among the pressing issues to be addressed is the revocation of the controversial Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulations, 2023 (L. I. 2462), which permits mining activities in protected forest areas.
As the nation grapples with the effects of illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, the demand for this revocation has intensified, reflecting a collective resolve among citizens and organized labor to protect the environment.
The government has responded to these calls, highlighting a commitment to curtail illegal mining practices, which have been a topic of significant public concern.
However, attendance at today’s session may be lower than expected, as many MPs are actively campaigning for re-election ahead of the December 7 elections.
The House is anticipated to adjourn shortly after approving the budget, allowing members to focus on their constituencies.
Meanwhile, organized labor recently suspended planned industrial action after engaging with government officials, expressing satisfaction with the concessions made to address their concerns over illegal mining.
