Effective Monday, April 1, 2024, Ghana has implemented new charges for passport application processing, significantly revising the existing fees. According to the updated rates posted on the passport application website, expedited applications for both 48-page and 32-page booklets will incur increased costs.
For expedited processing of a 48-page passport booklet, applicants will now be required to pay GH¢800, while the expedited application for a 32-page booklet will cost GH¢700. Meanwhile, standard processing fees for a 32-page passport booklet have been adjusted to GH¢500, with the 48-page booklet now priced at GH¢644.
The decision to revise the passport application fees was proposed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration in 2023. Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, in her address to Parliament last year, emphasized the need for realistic pricing to sustain passport production. She highlighted the financial strain on the government due to the significant gap between the actual production cost (GH¢400 per booklet) and the previous application fee of GH¢100.
Minister Botchwey stressed the necessity for Ghanaians to bear the true cost of acquiring passports for travel, citing the unsustainable nature of government subsidies. With the new fees, applicants will contribute more proportionally to the expenses associated with passport production, reducing the burden on state resources.
