The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the death of a Level 200 student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), whose body was recently discovered at Hutchland Beach in Cape Coast.
The suspect, identified as Michael Mensah, was picked up on Monday, June 15, 2026, around 7:15 p.m. at Pedu Lorry Station. His arrest was carried out by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team as part of what authorities describe as sustained intelligence-led operations.
Preliminary police investigations suggest that on June 11, 2026, at approximately 6:48 p.m., the suspect is believed to have picked up the deceased, identified as Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, from Ayensu Plaza within the university’s hostel area.
Investigators further indicate that Mensah, who reportedly claims to be a teacher but also works as a driver, later transported the student to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen alive.
The development follows the discovery of Innocentia’s body at the beach days after she was reported missing, sparking widespread concern among students and the university community.
Information gathered from a roommate of the deceased indicates that Innocentia had informed her she was going out to meet someone she knew shortly before leaving her room. She is said to have left in casual clothing and did not return, raising alarm among friends and relatives when she could not be reached.
Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have assured the public that further updates will be communicated as the case progresses.
Michael Mensah is currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
