The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Gomoa West constituency chairman, Mohammed Kassim, has been detained at the Bakaano police station in Cape Coast.
The arrest occurred amidst rising tensions following a violent altercation between NDC and New Patriotic Party (NPP) members on Monday, September 16.
The clash erupted during the presentation of machinery for the District Road Infrastructure Project (DRIP), with NDC supporters confronting the display of NPP candidate Bismark Basie Nkum’s posters on the state equipment.
Sources close to Kassim’s family suggest his arrest may be linked to this recent dispute. The confrontation reportedly escalated when NDC supporters questioned the political branding of the equipment.
The altercation grew more intense, with allegations that Gomoa West MP Richard Gyan-Mensah brandished a firearm and a machine operator was stabbed in the ear.
However, Gyan-Mensah has denied these claims through a press statement.
NDC supporters have gathered in large numbers at the police station, fervently demanding Kassim’s release.
The situation remains tense as both parties await further developments.
