The Ghana Police Service has arrested two suspects in connection with the deadly robbery attack on the Berekum Chelsea team bus, which claimed the life of footballer Daniel Frimpong.
According to an official statement from the police, the suspects — including the alleged gang leader — were picked up following what authorities described as an intelligence-led operation aimed at tracking down those behind the violent ambush.
“The Police have arrested the gang leader and one other suspect in connection with the robbery incident,” the statement confirmed.
Police further disclosed that one of the suspects sustained gunshot injuries during an exchange of fire with officers and is currently receiving treatment under strict police guard.
“One of the suspects sustained injuries during an exchange of fire with the police intelligence teams and has been conveyed to the hospital for medical attention,” the statement added.
The attack occurred when the Berekum Chelsea squad was returning from a Ghana Premier League Matchday 29 clash against FC Samartex 1996. The team bus was ambushed at Ahyiresu along the Bibiani–Goaso road after armed robbers reportedly blocked the route and launched a coordinated assault.
Players and officials on board were forced to flee for safety as the attackers opened fire.
Daniel Frimpong, who was among those on the bus, was fatally wounded during the incident. He was later pronounced dead at the Bibiani Government Hospital, a development that has sent shockwaves through Ghana’s football community.
The tragic killing has reignited concerns over the safety of clubs traveling for domestic league fixtures, with calls mounting for enhanced security measures.
Police say investigations are ongoing, with efforts underway to apprehend additional suspects linked to the attack.
