The Accra Regional Police Command has commenced investigations into violent disturbances that erupted during the climax of the Homowo Festival at Anyaa and Sowutuom on Saturday, August 30, 2025.
A statement issued by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, indicated that the disturbances began during the sprinkling of Kpokpoi, the festival’s ceremonial food.
The situation stemmed from a misunderstanding between followers of two rival chiefs, which escalated into gunfire and chaos.
The incident worsened as some participants attempted to leave the grounds, leading to further confrontations at nearby Olebu.
Three lives were lost, namely Abubakar Ramadan Sarbah, also known as Nii Kwashiebu, Theophilus Nii Amu Kwadjan, and Joseph Shaibu Dodoo.
Their remains have since been conveyed to the Police Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Four others sustained injuries, including Enoch Amevor, who has been treated and discharged, as well as Samuel Adjei, Nathaniel Doku, and Frederick Lartey, popularly called Nii Obrafour.
The victims are receiving medical care at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Ridge Hospital.
In the wake of the violence, additional officers have been dispatched to restore calm and guarantee safety. Police say intelligence-led operations are ongoing to apprehend all those responsible for the unrest.
The command has further cautioned traditional leaders and their followers to comply with established security measures to prevent future occurrences.
