The Tema Regional Police Command has intercepted 2,213 slabs of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp during a routine patrol on the River Volta.
The interception was carried out by the Marine Police Detachment at Ada at about 12:45 a.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at Tuanikopey Island.
According to the Police, the suspected narcotic substances were found in 29 sacks loaded onto an outboard-powered wooden canoe.
The occupants of the canoe reportedly abandoned the vessel and fled after sighting the Police during the patrol.
A subsequent search of the canoe uncovered the 29 sacks containing the 2,213 slabs, which had been wrapped in yellow cellotape.
Police also found 14 25-litre gallons in the canoe, 12 of which contained pre-mixed fuel, as well as two Yamaha outboard motors—one 40HP and the other 30HP.
The suspected narcotic substances have since been conveyed to the Ada District Police Headquarters, while arrangements are being made to transport the outboard motors and pre-mixed fuel to the station for further investigation.
The Tema Regional Police Command said efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the persons who abandoned the canoe and its contents.
The Command has also cautioned the public against engaging in the trafficking and transportation of narcotic substances.
It further urged anyone with information about the owners or occupants of the abandoned canoe to report to the nearest Police station to assist with the ongoing investigation.
