The Ashanti Regional Police Command has intensified a manhunt for the father of a 16-year-old student who accidentally shot a classmate with a stolen gun at Adventist Senior High School in Kumasi on Friday.
According to a police statement, the second-year student smuggled a locally manufactured pistol, loaded with one BB round, into the school premises. Preliminary investigations suggest he had taken the weapon from his father’s bedroom without the latter’s knowledge.
The incident occurred when the student reportedly attempted to show the gun to a classmate. The firearm accidentally discharged, injuring another student nearby. The injured victim was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he received medical attention and is currently in stable condition.
“The suspect, a juvenile, has been arrested, and the empty cartridge was retrieved from the scene as evidence,” the police confirmed.
The teenager confessed during interrogation that he took the weapon from home without informing or seeking permission from his father. Police say efforts are underway to locate and arrest the father to assist with ongoing investigations.
The incident has sparked concern among school authorities, parents, and the general public, raising fresh calls for improved security measures in schools and better parental responsibility regarding access to firearms.
Police have assured the public that the matter is being treated with the urgency it deserves and that both the juvenile and any adults found complicit will face the full rigors of the law.
