The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has announced plans to establish a National Election Security Task Force Press Briefing Center during Ghana’s 2024 general elections.
This was disclosed at a meeting on November 20, 2024, between the Police Management Board (POMAB) and senior editors of media houses.
“I have one plea, and the plea is that you are such a powerful force in our democratic dispensation. One thing that is of concern to us is information, and the concern becomes very negative when it is misinformation and disinformation,” Dr. Dampare stated.
He emphasized the media’s role in ensuring accurate reporting and pledged collaboration to eliminate “misinformation, disinformation, and malformation.”
The press center will accommodate up to 100 reporters and provide real-time updates in seven languages to promote accessibility.
Dr. Dampare described the facility as a critical tool for “sharing election information with the speed of light” while fostering effective media-police cooperation to counter misleading narratives.
The IGP further warned against intimidating or inflammatory statements during the election period, reiterating the police service’s readiness to enforce the law.
