Political analyst Dr. Samuel Afriyie of the Kumasi Technical University has warned Ghana’s security services to avoid deep involvement in partisan political matters, cautioning that such actions risk eroding public trust.
He said this on ABC News GH TV on Tuesday, in reaction to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ‘Yɛnsuro Ahunahuna’ demonstration, which protested alleged selective justice under President John Mahama’s government.
Dr. Afriyie noted that the use of state institutions against political opponents has become a recurring practice in governance, which he described as a dangerous precedent.
“We don’t see this as new,” he remarked, adding that such developments deepen polarization and undermine faith in democratic systems.
He urged national security agencies to resist being drawn into political contests, stressing that fairness and neutrality were essential to maintaining public confidence.
His caution comes as the NPP petitioned both the President and the Inspector-General of Police, citing harassment and politically motivated prosecutions of its members.
