Political analyst Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere has urged the government to rethink its approach to fighting illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, arguing that politicians are not the right individuals to lead the effort.
Speaking to ABC News GH, he emphasized that many politicians hesitate to take decisive action against illegal mining for fear of losing voter support.
“The minister is a politician; therefore, he will like to maintain his political favor… get someone who is not politically exposed,” he advised.
To ensure an effective fight against galamsey, Dr. Asante Otchere proposed appointing a non-partisan coordinator with no political affiliations or electoral concerns.
He further recommended equipping security personnel deployed to mining areas with digital cameras to provide real-time evidence of illegal activities.
“We cannot continue like this,” he exclaimed, stressing that only a neutral and fearless leader can make the tough decisions necessary to end the menace that has destroyed Ghana’s water bodies, forests, and food security.
