The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has confirmed that President John Dramani Mahama’s official Twitter (X) account was hacked and used to promote a suspicious cryptocurrency known as “Solana Africa.”
In a statement released on March 18, 2025, the CSA reported that the breach occurred in the early hours of March 17, during which the hackers leveraged the president’s social media influence to endorse the digital asset.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the security of high-profile accounts and the broader risks associated with online fraud.
The CSA assured the public that it is working closely with X (formerly Twitter) and other stakeholders to investigate the breach and implement measures to prevent future cyber threats.
The attack appears to be part of a growing trend of crypto scams using compromised accounts to create artificial legitimacy.
Data from trading platforms indicate that Solana Africa’s market capitalization surged to approximately $2.4 million after Mahama’s account was used to promote it, only to crash to around $7,000 after liquidity was drained.
Analysts estimate that the attackers may have stolen up to $1.9 million before dumping the tokens and abandoning the scheme.
The CSA’s confirmation highlights the urgent need for enhanced social media security protocols for public figures and increased vigilance from both regulatory bodies and the general public.
The Authority has promised to provide further updates as investigations progress.
