The Kyedomhemaa of Ekumfi Asaman, Nana Enyinfua III, has appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for assistance in obtaining the autopsy report that reveals the cause of President John Evans Atta Mills’ death in 2012.
Emphasizing her role as the head of the maternal family, she underscored the difficulty in discerning the circumstances surrounding the demise of the former Ghanaian President, maintaining that neither she nor the Ghanaian state possesses information regarding the cause.
Nana Enyinfua conveyed this request during a visit with a delegation from the Oduma Clan of Ekumfi, the maternal family of the late Prof Mills, expressing gratitude to the President for the refurbishment of the final resting place of the late President Mills at the Jubilee House in Accra on Friday, January 12, 2024.
“Since I assumed office as Obaahemaa, I have not seen any autopsy reports. If they ask me what led to his demise, I don’t know whether the doctor said he had a fractured leg, fractured neck, or drunk something; that one I cannot tell,” she said.
“I stand in for all my family members. We are pleading with you and your government to help the family to get the autopsy report so that, in the future, it will be a guide for the unborn children in the family. We plead that before you finish your term, please help the family to get hold on it and file it,” she added.
In response to a renewed request for the autopsy report, Dr. Cadman Mills, the brother of the late President John Evans Atta-Mills, tweeted his reaction.
“VERY STALE NEWS!!! And exasperating! President Mills died. An Autopsy was performed at 37 Military Hospital. A “Family Representative” was present at autopsy, as required by law. The (legitimate) family can obtain a copy from “37” to do with as it pleases. Next Subject.“
When President Akufo-Addo questioned Koku Anyidoho, who was part of the delegation, about the unavailability of the report, Mr. Koku Anyidoho responded, “Honestly, if the family had not raised the issue about the autopsy report, it was something that I have stayed away from for very good reason. Lest, I am accused of entering certain realms” and added that he never saw any report and nothing was presented officially.
He mentioned that he learned from Mr. Samuel Atta Mills, a brother of the late President Mills, via a radio statement that he already possessed an autopsy report. President Akufo-Addo expressed the belief that if such a report existed, it should be part of the official public records, considering it a valid request.
President Akufo-Addo clarified that his swift response to Koku Anyidoho’s request for government assistance in refurbishing Asomdwe Park was influenced by his friendship with Prof Atta-Mills and the latter’s former role as President of Ghana. He voiced concern over the escalating criticism directed at Koku Anyidoho in relation to the refurbishment, attributing it to partisan politics.
