Communications Team member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) , Edmund Fandoh Wilson, has downplayed tensions and internal attacks within the party’s ongoing leadership race, insisting that the NPP has the resilience and unity to emerge stronger after the contest.
Speaking on ABC in the Morning on Friday, January 30, 2026, Mr. Fandoh Wilson said political jabs and attacks among party actors are not new to Ghana’s political space and should not be misconstrued as signs of a fractured party.
“For the jabs and attacks on one another, it’s not new to the political sphere we find ourselves in,” he said, stressing that despite the heated exchanges, the NPP’s internal cohesion remains intact.
According to him, the party has a strong tradition of unity that comes to the fore after competitive internal elections. He assured supporters that regardless of the outcome of the current race, party members will close ranks and rally behind the eventual leader.
“Despite all the attacks we have, that cohesion, that bond and unity remains. No matter what happens at the end of the day, the elephant will unite its members. We will unite ourselves and make sure we rally behind the new leader of the party,” he stated.
Mr. Fandoh Wilson pointed to recent history to back his claims, citing the party’s 2023 internal elections where all contenders publicly threw their support behind the winner, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, after the polls.
“We have precedent in the last one in 2023 where after the elections, all the candidates came out to declare their support for the winner, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” he noted.
He further reflected on the NPP’s historical journey, recalling the party’s survival through what he described as extremely difficult periods during the era of former President Jerry John Rawlings, particularly at the advent of Ghana’s multiparty democratic system.
“From the history of the party, from where we came from, during those difficult times in the Rawlings era, with the introduction of multiparty democracy, sabotage and intimidation from government structures, the NPP sailed through all of that and has come this far,” he said.
Mr. Fandoh Wilson also expressed confidence in the party’s resilience, saying “We are used to the stress and the hard times, and I believe with resilience on our side, the party will come out stronger”.
