Railway workers across the country have commenced an indefinite strike today, Tuesday, May 13, 2025, in protest over seven months of unpaid salaries.
The action, led by the Railway Workers Union, comes after a final ultimatum to the Ghana Railway Company Limited expired without response. Over 900 employees have been affected, with union leaders warning that the strike will persist until all arrears are paid.
The walkout is expected to disrupt critical rail services, particularly on the Tema–Accra route, affecting thousands of daily commuters.
Justice Achampong, Chairman of the Greater Accra branch of the union, expressed frustration over the government’s silence on the matter.
“They tell us nothing,” he told ABC News GH, emphasizing the lack of communication from both the company and the government.
He added that the workers’ patience has worn thin, and the prolonged hardship is no longer sustainable.
The union maintains that it will not return to work until the government honours its obligations, urging immediate intervention to avoid a prolonged transportation crisis.
