The Managing Director of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Mahama has indicated that explosive growth of homes in Tse-Addo and Amasaman has led to strain on electricity infrastructure, with overloaded transformers becoming a pressing concern.
“The level of homes that have come up within this short space of time and the overloads on these transformers are astonishing,” Mahama remarked.
Mahama admits that the rapid development in these areas was not anticipated.
“The speed to which Tse-Addo has grown was never envisaged by ECG,” the spokesperson noted, highlighting that they are now playing “catch-up” to meet the demands of new residents.
This situation has necessitated intensification efforts to ensure a stable electricity supply, as the company grapples with the unforeseen surge in demand.
In response to concerns about service fees, the DG emphasized that any charges would align with the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) guidelines, stating, “It is not profit-oriented for ECG.”
This statement came during the public sitting of the Ministry of Energy and its agencies, facilitated by the Public Accounts Committee.
“When this happens, it has to be a shared responsibility,” he concluded.
