The West Africa Director of CUTS International, Appiah Adomako Kusi, has urged the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to reject any proposed utility tariff hikes that exceed 100 percent.
His call follows recent submissions from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ghana Water Limited, both of which are seeking tariff adjustments of more than 200 percent.
Kusi cautioned that approving such steep increments would impose a significant financial strain on consumers, many of whom are already grappling with high living costs.
He stressed that while cost-reflective tariffs are important for the sustainability of utility providers, the proposed increases are excessive and risk worsening economic hardship.
According to him, the PURC must strike a balance between ensuring the viability of service providers and protecting consumers from unbearable financial pressure.
He emphasized that any tariff adjustments should be moderate, reasonable, and implemented in a way that does not destabilize households and businesses.
