Starting February 2024, the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) has announced a policy wherein salaries of public sector workers without Ghana Card will be frozen. This directive is a move by the CAGD to eliminate fictitious entries in the government’s payroll.
In a recent development stemming from discussions with the National Identification Authority (NIA) about a specialized registration effort for those yet to obtain the Ghana Card, the CAGD disclosed that a significant resolution has been reached, potentially impacting the income of numerous individuals.
The interaction between the CAGD and NIA transpired during a meeting on October 11, 2023, where proposed timelines for a registration initiative were deliberated.
In response, the NIA clarified that they had previously conveyed their inability to conduct a distinct registration initiative. Instead, they had initiated a nationwide registration drive starting September 4, with a specific focus on public sector employees featured on the government payroll.
Due to these developments, the CAGD has issued a crucial advisory to its members, urging them to promptly register for Ghana Cards at any of the 292 NIA offices across the country. Significantly, government employees are being targeted as a priority in this compliance drive.
