Carl Nii Anyetei Sowah, Acting Head of Communications at the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, has called on Parliament to expedite the passage of the Small Arms Bill.
He explained that the legislation would help curb the proliferation of firearms and reduce the threat to public safety.
Mr. Sowah also appealed to traditional rulers to take proactive steps in discouraging the use of live ammunition during cultural festivities.
His remarks follow violent incidents at this year’s Homowo celebrations, where gun-related clashes were recorded in some communities.
Over the weekend, tensions in Sowutuom resulted in the deaths of three individuals, while two others reportedly lost their lives earlier in Teshie under similar circumstances.
The Commission expressed concern about the growing trend of firearms use during festivals and urged community leaders to prioritise safety while upholding the sanctity of traditional events.
