President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to revamp grassroots sports development with the creation of the Schools Sports Authority (SSA). This initiative aims to strengthen inter-school competitions and enhance talent identification across Ghana.
Speaking during his State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2025, President Mahama emphasized the importance of investing in youth sports development to build a strong pipeline of future athletes.
“Recognizing the critical role of youth development, we are implementing a significant overhaul of grassroots sports with the establishment of the Schools Sports Authority (SSA),” he announced.
“This body will oversee structured inter-schools competitions and talent identification initiatives essential for nurturing future champions,” he added.
The new Schools Sports Authority is expected to work closely with the Ministry for Sports and Recreation, the Ghana Education Service (GES), and other stakeholders to ensure a sustainable framework for youth participation in sports.
The initiative marks a major step toward revitalizing Ghana’s sports ecosystem, ensuring that young talents receive the right training, exposure, and competitive opportunities from an early stage.
