The National Communication Authority (NCA) has officially announced that Starlink, a satellite internet service provider, is expected to commence operations in Ghana by the end of August. This development marks a significant milestone in the country’s quest to enhance internet accessibility, especially in remote and underserved areas.
In a press statement released by the NCA on Thursday, August 22, the authority stated that the internet service provider has completed all administrative and licensing procedures required for commencing operations in the country.
“Starlink will officially commence operations in Ghana by the end of this month (August, 2024). This follows the conclusion of all administrative and licensing procedures with the National Communications Authority (NCA)”, the statement read.
Prior this development, the Authority through a media briefing on December 7, 2023 declared the operations of Starlink in the country as illegal after it revealed that Starlink does not have the necessary authorization to operate in Ghana.
Meanwhile, this latest development comes in the wake of widespread criticism and calls for the dissolution of the NCA board by the public, partly due to MTN’s classification as a Significant Market Power (SMP), which some argue has led to unreliable data supply and high costs.
However, the regulatory body, in addressing concerns over high data costs and poor services, reassured consumers that it is committed to promoting fair competition and safeguarding their interests as it promised that data prices will decrease by the last quarter of the year.
