President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has challenged former President John Dramani Mahama to engage in a public debate with Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate for the upcoming elections.
Speaking at a campaign event in Damongo, Savanna Region, Akufo-Addo emphasized that Ghanaians deserve to witness both candidates discuss critical national issues and propose viable solutions as the nation approaches the 2024 elections.
Akufo-Addo criticized Mahama for what he perceives as an avoidance of direct debate, urging him to confront Bawumia in an open forum. “Mahama shouldn’t run away from the debate.
The Ghanaian people deserve to see the two of them talking about national issues and bringing solutions. Why is he running away?” he asked, firmly asserting his confidence in Bawumia’s capabilities.
He highlighted the Vice-President’s extensive experience, stating, “My Vice-President, Bawumia, has worked with me for 16 years. He is the best candidate to continue the presidency of Ghana.”
The call for a debate has intensified the already charged political landscape, with the NPP banking on Bawumia’s track record in government and economic expertise to sway voters.
In contrast, Mahama has centered his campaign on advocating for change in leadership and criticizing the current government’s economic policies.
However, his campaign team has categorically rejected calls for a pre-election debate, with spokesperson Bawah Mogtari expressing skepticism about the need for such a debate.
