Kwadwo Asante, the incumbent Member of Parliament for the Suhum Constituency in the Eastern Region, has announced his decision to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming December 7th, 2024, general election.
This declaration follows his defeat in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary in January 2024, where he lost to Frank Asiedu Bekoe, popularly known as Protozoa, by 179 votes.
Despite the loss, Asante’s supporters have been advocating for his independent candidacy, arguing that he remains the preferred choice for many in the constituency.
During a health walk held over the weekend at the Suhum Amponsah Market, Asante officially confirmed his intention to contest as an independent candidate, citing overwhelming support from his constituents.
“I am the helper this constituency needs, and my decision to run is solely in response to the calls of the masses,” Asante stated.
Reports indicate that high-ranking officials, including Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Bryan Acheampong, had attempted to persuade him to remain with the party, but Asante appears resolute in his decision.
The Suhum Constituency has been a hotbed of political tension, particularly since Asante’s victory in the 2020 general election.
His recent campaign launch, featuring the slogan “Oboafo Toaso” (Oboafo Continue), has further heightened the rivalry between his supporters and those of Frank Asiedu Bekoe.
The constituency has a history of political violence, with clashes between opposing factions leading to bloodshed in the past.
Asante’s decision to run independently is expected to intensify the already volatile political atmosphere in Suhum as the December election approaches.
