After years of anticipation and extensive development, Ghana’s 97.6 km Tema-Mpakadan standard railway line is set for inauguration on November 21, 2024.

This milestone in the nation’s infrastructure seeks to enhance connectivity between the southern and northern regions, providing a much-needed boost to trade and economic growth.

The ambitious project began in 2018 as part of the Ghana-Burkina Faso Interconnectivity Project, with the goal of linking Ghana to its northern neighbor.

A notable feature of this railway is the 300m-long bridge over the Volta River, an engineering feat that showcases the scale and ambition of the initiative.

The railway line, which stretches from the port city of Tema to Mpakadan, includes six passenger stations: Tema Harbour, Tema Industrial Area, Ashaiman, Afienya, Shai Hills, Doryumu, Kpong, and Juapong.

A dedicated terminal near the port of Tema is designed to streamline the movement of goods to northern Ghana and beyond.

This efficient transport route promises comfortable and timely travel for passengers, fostering regional development and economic integration.

The project’s timeline faced delays due to challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic but regained momentum through a $447 million investment from the Export-Import Bank of India.

The new railway line is expected to accelerate Ghana’s socio-economic progress, potentially increasing the nation’s GDP by 2-3%.

By connecting with the Volta Lake transportation system, it will facilitate the movement of essential commodities such as freight, fuel, cement, and agricultural products.

This enhanced transportation network is poised to be a cornerstone for further economic growth, bridging communities and supporting trade flows that will stimulate prosperity across the region.
