President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians to uphold the nation’s hard-earned democratic values as the country prepares for the 2024 general elections.
In a heartfelt address delivered on the eve of the elections, the President called on citizens to ensure the peaceful conduct of the polls, emphasizing that the upcoming elections are a continuation of Ghana’s democratic journey.
Speaking from Jubilee House, Akufo-Addo described the election as a pivotal moment in the nation’s history, where Ghanaians will vote to elect a new president and members of the ninth Parliament.
Reflecting on his time in office, the President expressed immense pride in Ghana’s democratic achievements, noting that younger generations now see voting as a vital and routine part of civic responsibility.
He highlighted the importance of democracy, stating, “Democracy is not just the right to vote; it is the right to live in dignity.”
Quoting Thomas Jefferson, President Akufo-Addo reminded Ghanaians that “eternal vigilance is the price of liberty,” urging them to protect the democratic values that have made Ghana a beacon of stability in Africa.
He stressed that the ballot is more powerful than the bullet, reinforcing the need for vigilance and commitment to preserving the country’s democratic ideals.
