Former Railway Minister and ex-MP for Essikado-Ketan, Joe Ghartey, has expressed deep concern over the recent disorderly conduct in Ghana’s Parliament, warning against the dangerous path of political instability.
Speaking on Focus with Joshua N.K. Ayira on ABC News on Thursday, February 6, Ghartey described the chaotic scenes as “regrettable,” emphasizing that “Parliament is not a boxing ring.” He cautioned lawmakers to be mindful of their words and actions, as reckless behavior could undermine Ghana’s democracy.
“MPs must be circumspect with their utterances,” he advised, reflecting on recent confrontations in the House.
“Democracy Over Military Rule”
Drawing from his experience, Ghartey recalled the harsh realities of military rule and underscored the importance of protecting democracy.
“I have lived under military rule, and I will say what we have now is ten times better,” he stated.
His remarks come amid debates over the effectiveness of the Ninth Parliament under the revised standing orders.
“Afenyo-Markin Is Tough, But Doing Well”
When asked about his thoughts on Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Ghartey acknowledged his resilience.
“I think he is doing well. He is tough, and I wish him well,” he noted.
Presidential Ambitions?
The former MP, who previously contested for the NPP flagbearership in 2016 but lost to President Nana Akufo-Addo.
On whether he has intentions of running for presidency again, Ghartey opted for a cryptic response, saying, “When the horn blows, then we will see the passengers who will climb the train,” leaving the door open for speculations.
