Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has advocated for a comprehensive restructuring of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to enhance the performance of the national football team, the Black Stars.
“This is what we get when we have a situation where individuals are involved in club management and these same individuals are in the football management of the country. They are also managers and agents of players, as well as agents of technical people. It becomes difficult for us to avoid the situation of conflict of interest.” he quoted
The ex-Sports Minister and current Member of Parliament for Odododiodioo, expressing his concerns, contends that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is currently grappling with a significant conflict of interest. This, in his view, is adversely affecting the morale of the players representing the national soccer team.
“This is affecting morale among our players. It is sickening, and we must talk about it. I agree with people who think that the whole GFA must be restructured; I totally agree. The alternative is to have an interim management committee look at it,” he added
The genesis of his remarks is rooted in the recent setback faced by Ghana during the 2023 AFCON, where the Black Stars experienced a late-game collapse resulting in a 2-2 draw with Mozambique. Adding to the woes, the head coach, Chris Hughton, was subsequently dismissed from his position.
Nii Lante Vanderpuye advocates for immediate and decisive action to address this unsettling pattern. He underscores the urgency of rectifying the perceived conflict of interest within the GFA, emphasizing its detrimental impact not only on the team’s performance but also on the overall morale of the players. The call for remedial measures is prompted by the imperative to salvage the national soccer team’s prospects and restore confidence in the administration of Ghanaian football.
