Edward Brenya, Head of History and Political Science at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has raised concerns over growing divisions within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), urging the party’s leadership to address internal conflicts swiftly.
Speaking on ABC Midday News, Brenya highlighted the longstanding issues that have plagued the party, referencing past instances of internal strife involving senior party members.
“This thing has started long ago before now,” he noted, pointing out that the current situation is the culmination of unresolved tensions. He further stressed that the NPP should have prioritized unity within the ranks, especially in light of the party’s struggles in the 2024 election.
Brenya warned that the visible cracks at the top of the party could trickle down to the executive level and ultimately affect the rank-and-file members, creating further fragmentation.
“There is a clear division at the top, and it needs to be solved quickly,” he asserted, emphasizing that denial of the party’s failure in the 2024 elections only exacerbates the problem.
His comments come amid heightened tensions within the party following the recent withdrawal of presidential aspirant Kennedy Agyapong from the NPP’s “Thank You” tour, citing security threats after a violent altercation at an event in Kumasi.
The violence, which involved a stabbing and a confrontation with armed men allegedly linked to the NPP, has further exposed the fault lines within the party.
Kennedy Agyapong, who remains a formidable figure within the NPP, has since indicated his intention to contest the party’s presidential primaries for the 2028 elections, making it clear that no one within the party could intimidate him.
