Minister Sam Nartey George has announced that TikTok will, for the first time, deploy a team to Ghana to build the capacity of local content creators and improve their monetisation.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, he disclosed that the move comes with a new payout arrangement between TikTok and GCB Bank, which will allow creators to receive their earnings locally.
“I have had meetings with multiple associations of bloggers. We’ve been dealing with TikTok. We’re getting TikTok to, for the first time on the continent, fly in a team to come and help our content creators do capacity building for our content creators to improve their monetisation,” he said.
The minister revealed that his office had also secured a landmark deal with GCB Bank to create the first-ever payment channel for TikTok earnings in Ghana.
“At the same time, we’ve set up an engagement between TikTok and GCB Bank to be able, in the absence of PayPal in the country, which we’re also working on with the Bank of Ghana, to be able to offer a payment channel for our content creators here,” he noted.
The initiative is seen as a breakthrough for Ghana’s digital economy, where content creators have long faced hurdles in accessing payments due to restrictions on global platforms like PayPal.
Mr George further outlined the ministry’s broader agenda to support digital innovation, including work on 15 pieces of legislation such as the innovation and startup bill. He stressed that the government has no plans to regulate social media directly but expects platforms and associations to uphold ethical standards. He also disclosed progress on a new bill to address misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech across both digital and traditional media, with stakeholder engagements set to begin soon.
According to him, these interventions aim to strengthen Ghana’s digital ecosystem and open new opportunities for the country’s growing community of digital entrepreneurs.
