Tunisia have appointed French tactician Hervé Renard as the new head coach of the national team following the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi in the wake of a heavy defeat at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The decision comes after Tunisia suffered a 5–1 loss to Sweden in their opening Group F fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a result that triggered swift action from the Tunisian Football Federation and intensified criticism from fans and media.

Lamouchi, who was appointed in January 2026, leaves the role after just five months in charge. His tenure ends with a record of one win, one draw, and three defeats, with performances already under scrutiny following underwhelming friendly results against Austria and Belgium ahead of the tournament.

Before his dismissal, Lamouchi had publicly insisted he remained confident in his ability to turn things around, despite growing pressure surrounding the team’s form.

The federation has now turned to Renard, widely regarded as one of Africa’s most accomplished international coaches, in a bid to rescue Tunisia’s World Cup campaign. He is expected to join the squad immediately in Mexico and will reportedly bring members of his trusted technical team with him.

Veteran attacker Wahbi Khazri is expected to remain involved within the setup as Tunisia look to stabilise their campaign.

Renard, 56, brings extensive international experience, having previously guided both Zambia and Côte d’Ivoire to Africa Cup of Nations triumphs, as well as managing several national teams across his career.

Tunisia now face crucial remaining Group F fixtures against Japan and the Netherlands, with the new coach tasked with quickly restoring belief and competitiveness as they fight to stay in the tournament.
