Two men are missing after a canoe carrying six people capsized on the Offin River near Achiase in the Atwima Mponua District on Thursday, local officials confirmed.
The accident happened around 8 a.m. when the canoe, paddled by an inexperienced hand, lost control, according to Asaase Radio.
“All six fell into the river. We managed to rescue four, but we are still searching for the other two, who are adult males,” said Daniel Adu, a unit committee member in the area.
He added that personnel from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) had visited the scene but suspended the rescue operation until Friday, September 26. Traditional leaders also performed rituals at the riverbank, but Adu noted, “they appear helpless now.”
The incident has revived painful memories of a similar tragedy in 2021 on the same stretch of the river, where four people drowned.
Three bodies were recovered then, while the fourth was never found, heightening concerns about recurring safety risks on the Offin River.
