Two more individuals have lost their lives in the ongoing Bawku conflict, bringing the death toll to 19.
The victims, one identified as a Mamprusi and the other a Togolese national, were ambushed and killed while traveling in a truck from Bawku.
Local sources report that the assailants, whose identities remain unknown, opened fire on the vehicle, leading to their tragic deaths in an attack that underscores the escalating violence plaguing the region.
The Togolese victim had traveled to Bawku to care for his father, who had been gravely ill. His father’s condition worsened, and he eventually passed away.
The two men were en route back to Togo, transporting the deceased body of the Togolese man’s father, when they encountered the fatal ambush.
Bawku has been a hotspot of unrest fueled by chieftaincy disputes and underlying ethnic tensions, with recent escalations attributed to the reappearance of a rival chief, which has intensified divisions among the region’s ethnic groups.
Despite the deployment of security forces aimed at restoring calm, the violence persists, creating a climate of fear and instability among residents.
