The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has named its Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto, as Interim Vice-Chancellor, following a directive from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
The decision was taken at an emergency Governing Council meeting on 24th September 2025, after GTEC ordered former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, to vacate his post for breaching the constitutional retirement age.
In a letter dated September 19, 2025, GTEC cited Article 199(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires public officers to retire at 60 unless otherwise stated by law.
The Commission further referenced the University of Cape Coast Act (PNDCL 278) and the institution’s own statutes, which also enforce retirement and tenure limits.
Despite the matter being contested at the Cape Coast High Court, GTEC has directed that no substantive appointment be made until the case is resolved.
The University’s Governing Council, in a statement signed by Registrar Gideon Enoch Abbeyquaye, assured staff, students, and stakeholders that academic and administrative operations remain unaffected. Prof. Aheto will lead the institution in the interim as the leadership transition takes shape under GTEC’s directive.
