The University of Cape Coast (UCC) is in mourning following the sudden and tragic death of two members of its academic community, Dr Kwabena Koforobour Agyemang and his former teaching assistant, Mr Peter Amoadu-Asmah, who lost their lives in a road accident on the Cape Coast–Accra highway.

The fatal crash occurred on Tuesday, April 28, at Third Ridge along the busy highway. Both men are reported to have died at the scene. The circumstances leading to the accident are currently under investigation by authorities.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, April 29, management of the university described the incident as a devastating blow to the institution, noting that it has left the entire academic community in deep shock and grief.

Dr Agyemang, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Geography and Regional Planning, was widely regarded for his dedication to teaching, research, and academic service. Colleagues and students have described him as a committed educator who played a key mentorship role within the department, leaving a strong academic legacy.

His teaching assistant, Mr Amoadu-Asmah, had recently completed his national service under Dr Agyemang. A distinguished graduate of the same department, he was previously recognised as the overall best graduating student in his cohort, a reflection of his academic excellence and discipline.

The university community has been particularly struck by the loss of the young graduate, whose academic promise and work ethic had earned him admiration among peers and faculty members alike.

Tributes continue to pour in from students, lecturers, and alumni, many of whom have described both men as humble, dedicated, and deeply passionate about their field of study.

Profile: Dr Kwabena Koforobour Agyemang

Dr Agyemang was a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Geography and Regional Planning at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), a position he held from February 2022 until his passing in April 2026. Prior to that, he had served in the same department between October 2009 and January 2022, reflecting a long-standing academic career at the university.

He earned his PhD in Geography and Regional Planning from UCC in 2019. Before that, he obtained a Master of Philosophy degree in the same field from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology between 1997 and 1999.

Beyond academia, Dr Agyemang built an extensive professional portfolio. He worked as Senior Programme Officer at the Environmental Protection Agency from May 2000 to March 2005, and earlier served as Development Planning Officer at the Atwima District Assembly between February 1996 and June 2000. He also worked as an Economics and Geography tutor with the Ghana Education Service from January 1993 to January 1996.

In addition to his academic and professional engagements, he served as Senior Hall Tutor of Casely Hayford Hall until July 31, 2025, and was also the Director of GreenDev Solutions Limited between May 2008 and September 2009.

Profile: Mr Peter Amoadu-Asmah

Mr Amoadu-Asmah was a recent graduate and emerging academic talent in the Department of Geography and Regional Planning at UCC. He completed his secondary education at Methodist Senior High School between 2018 and 2021 before pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Geography and Regional Planning at UCC from November 2021 to December 2025.

During his studies, he undertook internship placements with the Mfantsiman Municipal Assembly in 2023 and 2024, gaining practical experience in local governance and development planning. Following the completion of his undergraduate studies, he was retained by the department as a teaching assistant from November 2025 until his untimely passing in April 2026.

He was widely regarded as a brilliant student, having been recognised as the overall best graduating student in his cohort.

Management of UCC has extended condolences to the bereaved families, assuring them of support during this difficult period.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Dr Agyemang and Mr Amoadu-Asmah as they cope with this unimaginable loss,” the statement read. “We share in their grief, and we stand with them in this difficult moment.”

The university also extended sympathy to students and staff affected by the tragedy, acknowledging the emotional impact the incident has had across the campus community.

UCC has further urged the media and public to handle reportage of the incident with care and sensitivity as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
