The United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) is urging Ghana to reaffirm its commitment to peace and security as the nation approaches the December 7 elections.
Addressing a gathering of diplomats and state officials at the forecourt of the State House on Thursday October 24, 2024, in commemoration of the 79th United Nations Day, Mr Santos Simao urged the Electoral Commission and all stakeholders including political parties to ensure a peaceful and violent free election.
Santos Simao called on Ghanaians to participate in the ‘I PLEDGE FOR PEACE’ campaign, which encourages citizens to publicly commit to upholding peace in the lead-up to the elections.
He stated, “It is therefore essential, now more than ever to reaffirm our commitment to peace and democracy.”
While addressing the gathering of diplomats and state officials, he expressed concern over Ghana’s slow progress towards achieving its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
With only 17% currently on track and a staggering financing gap of $4.2 trillion annually, he warned that at this rate, the SDGs will not be fully realized by 2030.
Santos Simao urged for immediate transformative actions, particularly in agriculture, to support local farmers and promote sustainable practices that enhance food security.
“To accelerate progress, we must first transform our agricultural practices, support local farmers and promote sustainable systems to enhance food security by respecting our natural resources,” he concluded, reinforcing the need for a united front in pursuing peace and sustainable development.
