Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe has officially assumed office as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), replacing Dr. Da Costa Aboagye.
With a rich background in public health and global health financing, Dr. Bampoe is expected to spearhead efforts to strengthen Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) at a time when healthcare funding faces mounting challenges.
In his first address to NHIA management and staff, Dr. Bampoe wasted no time in outlining his vision, emphasizing the urgent need to “uncap the NHIS levy” to ensure improved healthcare access and quality of service delivery for all.
His call aligns with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) health manifesto, which prioritizes universal health coverage and sustainable healthcare financing. The party seeks expand NHIS coverage, especially for the most vulnerable populations to bridge healthcare inequalities in Ghana.
Dr. Bampoe, a former Deputy Minister of Health under the Mahama administration, brings a wealth of international experience, having worked with the Global Fund and UNAIDS. His leadership arrives at a critical moment, as global funding cuts threaten essential health programs, including HIV prevention and treatment.
As he begins his tenure, all eyes are on how Dr. Bampoe will navigate the complexities of NHIA’s financial sustainability, the expansion of services, and the political landscape shaping Ghana’s healthcare future.
