Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has emphasized the need for a thorough selection process in the deployment of military officers for anti-galamsey operations.
He noted that the effectiveness of the fight against illegal mining depends largely on the integrity of the officers involved.
During his visit to the 2nd Infantry Battalion, the Minister urged military leadership to ensure that only disciplined and trustworthy personnel are chosen for the next wave of operations.
“If we do not carefully select officers for this mission, illegal miners will continue to bribe their way out, and our efforts will be in vain,” he warned.
The Minister’s call comes at a time when illegal mining remains a major challenge in the region, with reports of security officers allegedly accepting bribes to allow miners to continue their activities.
He urged military leadership to adopt strict vetting measures to prevent any form of compromise.
Nelson also reassured the battalion of the government’s commitment to providing the necessary support for their operations.
He encouraged them to remain resolute in tackling the menace, which has devastating effects on the environment and local communities.
