Takoradi Air Force Base in the Western Region is facing a major land encroachment issue, with approximately 88 acres of its 600-acre allocation being unlawfully taken over.
This growing problem poses serious operational challenges for the military command and threatens the long-term effectiveness of the Ghana Air Force’s operations in the region.
The encroachment, which has been occurring gradually, raises concerns about the security and functionality of the base.
The land originally allocated by the central government serves as a critical military zone for national defense and aviation training. However, unauthorized individuals and developers have been steadily occupying portions of the land, reducing the military’s ability to expand and operate efficiently.
During a briefing with the Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, who also chairs the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), the Commander of the Air Force Base, Air Commodore Kwabena Kissiedu Manukure Atiemo, highlighted the issue as a growing concern.
He urged the minister to engage relevant stakeholders to curb the illegal land takeover and prevent further encroachments.
In response, Minister Joseph Nelson assured the Air Force command of his full support in addressing the situation. He emphasized the importance of protecting military lands, especially those designated for primary operational purposes.
He further stressed the need for effective collaboration between government agencies and security forces to combat unauthorized land acquisition within military zones.
As part of his visit to the base, the minister engaged with commanders, staff, and key stakeholders to foster collaboration and gain a better understanding of the challenges facing the facility.
He also toured various facilities and ongoing projects, demonstrating his commitment to the development and operational efficiency of the Air Force base.
The encroachment issue at Takoradi Air Force Base underscores the need for strict enforcement of land regulations and enhanced security measures to safeguard vital military installations. Authorities are expected to take swift action to reclaim the encroached land and prevent further unauthorized developments in the area
