Ghana’s Black Queens are preparing for a high-stakes showdown against Tanzania in their final Group C fixture at the 2024 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, with their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages hanging in the balance.

After an underwhelming start to the tournament — a 2-0 loss to reigning champions South Africa followed by a 1-1 draw with Mali — Ghana finds itself in a must-win scenario. Only a victory in Monday’s match at the Berkane Municipal Stadium will keep their continental campaign alive.

Speaking ahead of the game, head coach Kim Björkegren acknowledged the frustration after the team’s draw against Mali but emphasized the importance of staying focused and positive.

“We worked hard for three points, so we were disappointed with just one point. But getting at least one point was important, and now everything is in our own hands,” he said.

Despite the mixed results, the Black Queens have demonstrated offensive promise throughout the tournament, recording a combined 31 shots over their two matches. Coach Björkegren remains confident that his team’s breakthrough is imminent.

“We had 13 shots against South Africa and 18 against Mali, but only one goal. We know we can score more, and we will. Players like Adubia and Alice Kusi can step up,” he added.

As the team faces growing pressure, the Swedish coach expressed unwavering belief in his players’ potential to deliver when it matters most.

“We are in a great position,” Björkegren concluded. “I still believe in the players. I’m sure we’re going to win this game and move on from there.”

Kick-off for the crucial fixture is scheduled for 19:00 GMT on Monday, July 14, 2025, at the Berkane Municipal Stadium. All attention will be on the Black Queens as they battle to keep their WAFCON journey alive.
