The New Patriotic Party’s Deputy Director of Communications, Kokuro Asiedu, has dismissed speculation that the party’s withdrawal from the Tamale Central by-election was a strategic ploy to push the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) into also pulling out of the Akwatia by-election.
Speaking on ABC in the morning, Asiedu made it clear that the two elections are unrelated and that the NPP’s decision regarding Tamale Central was driven solely by moral grounds.
“This would have been a great opportunity to increase our popularity in the constituency,” he said, pointing out that the party’s choice not to contest had nothing to do with political gamesmanship.
Asiedu further explained that while the NPP remains ready to compete in Akwatia, the withdrawal from Tamale Central was based on respect for the late MP’s memory and the circumstances surrounding his passing.
He reiterated that the decision was not linked to any broader electoral manoeuvres but was instead a reflection of the party’s values in sensitive moments.
