The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has implemented stringent measures to ensure a secure environment for the upcoming general elections, including the establishment of an election security secretariat tasked with overseeing, planning, and executing election-related matters. Collaborating closely with other security agencies, the GPS is committed to ensuring that the elections proceed without any security breaches.
Commissioner of Police (COP) Iddi Lansah Seidu, the Director-General of ICT at the Police Headquarters, revealed these measures during the passing out ceremony of 29 graduates and 159 general recruits at the Regional Police Training School in Ho last Wednesday.
Addressing the new police personnel, Mr. Seidu emphasized the significance of their graduation in an election year, cautioning them to enforce election laws impartially while respecting the rights of citizens. He highlighted the evolving nature of security threats globally, including complex and cyber-related crimes, as well as changes in criminal tactics. These developments, he stressed, necessitated a more diverse, skilled, and specialized approach from GPS personnel to address contemporary crime trends.
“You are to treat them with respect, exhibit a high sense of professionalism, and live law-abiding lives for others to emulate.Always remember that policing is about service, sacrifice, and selflessness,” he told the new officers.
To equip officers with the necessary skills to meet evolving security challenges, Mr. Seidu mentioned the development of a new training module integrating theory with practical field exercises and simulations. Nearly 7,000 new police personnel have already benefited from this updated training approach.
“Now, the focus is on field training activities such as riding, driving, swimming, crowd control, and incident and disaster management,” he added.
Mr. Seidu urged the newly graduated officers to uphold high standards in maintaining law, order, and security in the country. During the ceremony, Graduate G/Sgt Michael Peprah Yeboah and General Recruit Godfred Kabatia were recognized as the under-cadet and best recruit, respectively, showcasing the dedication and excellence expected from members of the Ghana Police Service.
