Political scientist at Kumasi Technical University, Dr. Samuel Afriyie, has called on residents to eschew tribalism in MMDCEs’ appointments, highlighting that tribal affiliations and dynamics can lead to divisions and chaos.
He stressed the importance of managing tribal sentiments carefully to maintain peace and unity.
Dr. Samuel Afriyie, says traditional leaders wield significant influence in the appointment of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
Speaking on ABC News GH on Tuesday, Dr. Afriyie called on the president to consult chiefs before making MMDCE’s appointment.
He noted that while political agitation is not unusual during these processes, the rising levels of conflict in the aftermath of the appointment are becoming concerning.
He emphasised the need for restraint, adding that because these are local positions, communities naturally prefer representatives from their own backgrounds, hence the need for extensive consultation.
