International relations expert and security analyst Dr. Vladmir Antwi Danso has called on Ghana to reconsider its reliance on foreign aid following the suspension of financial support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Speaking on Prime News on ABC News GH on Tuesday, February 11, Dr. Antwi Danso expressed concern over the impact of the USAID withdrawal on critical sectors in Ghana, urging the country to focus on becoming self-reliant.
“We should better ourselves and be more self-reliant. It’s unfortunate that this situation has occurred, but it’s an opportunity for us to reassess how we approach our economic needs,” he said.
Council of State Must Operate Independently
In addition, Dr. Antwi Danso urged the Council of State to function without political interference.
“The role of the Council does not need any political interventions. We want the Council of State to be active,” he emphasized, advocating for a stronger, more independent advisory body to ensure that Ghana’s interests are properly represented.
Mahama Takes Action to Address Funding Shortfall
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has tasked Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson with addressing the $156 million funding gap created by the suspension of the USAID program.
A statement from the Presidency highlighted that the funding shortfall threatens vital health and social intervention programs, including malaria prevention, maternal and child healthcare, family planning, and HIV/AIDS treatment.
The President has instructed urgent steps be taken to secure immediate funding to prevent disruptions to these critical services.
