Livid after a heated scuffle at the NDC’s Akwatia office, the party’s National Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka, accused Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin of storming the premises with supporters to remove party posters.
The angry remarks came as tensions escalated between rival groups in the constituency.
The clash followed heightened confrontations at the Akwatia Lorry Station in the Vawaso Electoral Area on Tuesday during the ongoing by-election. The altercation involved Alhaji Osman Masawudu, the third National Vice Chairman of the NPP, and an escort of Chief Sofo Azorka.
Narrating the incident, Masawudu explained that he was engaging the media near the Akwatia Zongo area when he was suddenly confronted and attacked in the full view of security personnel.
He further alleged that Azorka’s team disrupted his media interaction and instigated the clash. Security authorities are yet to issue an official response.
The by-election was necessitated by the passing of Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia.
Over 50,000 registered voters are expected to choose between NDC’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo and NPP’s Solomon Kwame Asumadu. Both parties have mounted vigorous campaigns, with national executives actively canvassing for votes.
To ensure order, the Ghana Police Service deployed more than 5,500 officers, while the Electoral Commission has assured residents of a credible process and urged all to respect electoral regulations.
