A member of the Presidency’s Communications Team, Dr. Sammy Ayeh, has assured Ghanaians that the government is fully committed to eradicating illegal mining (galamsey) within a year.
Speaking on ABC News GH on Thursday, he emphasized the administration’s strong resolve to tackle the menace, stating that the previous government failed to address the issue effectively.
His comments come in response to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which has accused the current government of merely engaging in talks rather than taking decisive action against galamsey.
“We (NDC) have the commitment to fight it. The NPP did not have that commitment,” Dr. Ayeh declared, adding that under the current administration, no appointee or politically exposed person would be permitted to engage in mining. He described this as a “significant milestone” that Ghanaians should acknowledge and appreciate.
Dr. Ayeh further reiterated President John Mahama’s stance on the issue, stressing that District Chief Executives (DCEs) will be held accountable if illegal mining is found within their jurisdictions.
“If you are a District Chief Executive, the moment mining is seen in your district, you are removed. And I can assure you that by the time this year ends, we will see significant improvement in our water bodies,” he assured.
